Los Angeles City Council
stifling business and wasting taxpayer money—again
By Craig Huey
Once again, the Los Angeles City Council is wasting taxpayer money and promoting a socialist, anti-business agenda.
In February 2006, the Los Angeles City Council enacted the “Grocery Worker Retention” ordinance, which stated that anytime there is a transfer of ownership of a grocery store over 15,000 square feet, the new owners must pay the existing workforce for at least 90 days.
Now, the Los Angeles Superior Court has ruled that the ordinance is illegal and the California Grocer’s Association has the right to sue the city over the ordinance.
It’s yet another example of the city council’s anti-business meddling with the free market—and in this case, violation of federal labor laws. |
